Days out

From the door: Baneuil to the canal: Look round Baneuil's church and château first, then walk down through the fields to the Borie-Basse lock and aqueduct on the old Lalinde canal. Follow the towpath along the greenway, and finish with croissants from Au Pain d'Ici at Port de Couze before heading back up the hill.
The owners' walks from the door: Three loops the owners walk themselves, all starting from the house: the short Goats & hounds loop through the woods, the Montaud loop (uphill on the way back), and the longer walk across the fields to Cause-de-Clérans church. Choose one on the map to see its route.
Thursday market in Lalinde: Lalinde's market fills the bastide streets until about 1pm: fruit, cheese, walnuts and rotisserie chicken for lunch. Pick up bread on the square, have a coffee and lunch at Le Coulobre, then drive up to the Saint-Front chapel for the view back over the river.
Cycle the canal greenway to Mauzac: Hire bikes or e-bikes and ride the flat V91 greenway east along the canal, past the Lalinde bastide to the end of the canal at Mauzac. Swim or paddle by the dam lake, and in summer take the free river shuttle before riding back.
Canoe to Limeuil, lunch by the river: Book a canoe trip that finishes at Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. After paddling, climb the village lanes to the panoramic gardens and have lunch or a pizza by the water at Le Chai.
Caves and prehistory on the Vézère: Start underground at the Gouffre de Proumeyssac near Le Bugue, a huge crystal cave reached by a gentle path. Drive on to Les Eyzies for the National Museum of Prehistory, then the Grotte du Grand Roc's stalactites in the cliff above the river. Bring a jumper: caves stay around 13°C.
Castles and gardens of the Dordogne valley: Climb up to the Château de Beynac above the river, then take a 50-minute gabarre boat trip from below the village. Cross the river to Castelnaud for its medieval siege engines and finish in the clipped box gardens and cliff-top views of Marqueyssac.
Wine afternoon around Bergerac: Taste sweet Monbazillac at the château above its vineyards, then head into Bergerac's old town. The Quai Cyrano wine house has local bottles to try and buy, and Quai Salvette's riverside tables suit a group dinner.
A rainy day: See paper made by hand at the Moulin de la Rouzique in Couze, 10 minutes away. After lunch, swim indoors at Aqualud in Bergerac, then finish with bowling or a film at the Grand Écran Cyrano.
Family day: Bridoire and the lake: The Château de Bridoire has around a hundred giant wooden games, archery and a maze in its grounds, which keeps children busy for hours. In the late afternoon, swim at the Lac de Pombonne beach and eat at its guinguette.
Sunday market at Issigeac: Issigeac's Sunday market winds through the whole medieval village and is one of the best in the area. Arrive before 10am to park easily, then stay on for lunch at L'Atelier.
Saint-Émilion and the Bordeaux vineyards: Drive west along the Dordogne to Saint-Émilion and arrive early to park. Take the guided tour of the underground monolithic church, then have lunch at Logis de la Cadène (weekdays) or with a vineyard view at La Terrasse Rouge. In the afternoon, Château Chauvin's treasure-hunt tour keeps children busy while the grown-ups taste.
Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac: Start early at the Gouffre de Padirac (book a timed ticket) for the boat trip on its underground river. Drive on to Rocamadour, the pilgrimage village built into the cliff, for lunch with a view, then the flying displays at the Rocher des Aigles or the free-roaming monkeys at the Forêt des Singes. All are open roughly April to early November.
Brantôme and Bourdeilles: Brantôme sits in a loop of the Dronne: take the 50-minute boat trip, look round the abbey and the caves behind it, then have lunch by the river. On the way back, stop at the Château de Bourdeilles above the river for its keep and Renaissance rooms. Brantôme's market is on Friday mornings.
Périgueux market morning: Périgueux's big producers' market fills the old town on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, with the foie gras market in winter. Wander the medieval lanes up to the domed cathedral of Saint-Front, then see the Roman villa at the Vesunna museum under its glass roof.
Bonaguil castle and the bastides: Head south through bastide country: coffee in Monflanquin's arcaded square (market on Thursday mornings), then the great fortress of Bonaguil, a castle built for the age of cannon, with towers and ramparts to explore. Allow two hours at the castle.
A day in Bordeaux: Leave the car at a tram park-and-ride on the edge of the city (or take the train) and start at the Place de la Bourse and its Miroir d'eau. Walk the old streets to the Capucins market for lunch at the oyster bars, then take a boat trip on the Garonne or ride the tram to La Cité du Vin. Saint-Émilion makes an easy stop on the way home.
